Residents of Segut Village in Nandi County were greeted with shock after they found the body of a 40-year-old man suspected to have been mauled to death by dogs.
The deceased, whose body was found lying along the road, is suspected to have been killed by dogs from one of the neighbours known to rear 13 German shepherd dogs to secure his farm.
According to the residents, the man identified as Geoffrey Kipruto, was on his way going back home at around 11 pm when the hostile dogs broke the fence and attacked him.
Elvis Ruto, a neighbour, said that the deceased, a retired police officer had paid a visit to one of his friends in the neighbourhood on Wednesday evening.
“The neighbours’ dogs sneaked out of the compound and attacked Kipruto. But nobody heard him calling for help until the following morning when his mutilated body was found,” he said.
The villagers protested on Thursday morning demanding the arrest of the dogs’ owner, threatening to take action into their hands before police intervened and calmed the situation.
“The irate residents attempted to hunt the dogs but their caretaker intentionally released them from the compound,” he added.
Chesumei OCPD Omukolongolo Bosita confirmed the incident and said that the police arrived at the scene in the morning and found the body of Kipruto lying with his head, chest, legs and private parts mauled by the dogs.
“We have established that the dogs belong to one of the successful businessmen in Kapsabet. The body was removed from the scene and taken to the County Hospital morgue in Kapsabet,” he said.
“We noted that four dogs are in lactating and the rest are suspected to have attacked Kipruto. Investigations are ongoing to reach a conclusive end for justice to be served to the family,” he said.
The Sub County Police boss said that legal action will be taken upon establishing negligence from the owner of the dogs following reports that they had attacked locals in the past.
