Expert calls for change of mindset towards Mathematics – KBC

There need to tackle the growing negative perception of Mathematics subject by pupils and students at different levels of education.

Talented mathematician Winnie Wambui Ngumi says that most students perceive mathematics as the most difficult subject yet it’s the easiest with the right attitude, hard work and desire to know.

Speaking at Compuera Mang’u Girls high school in Juja during a National Mathematics Contest organized by Kenya Mathematics initiative, Wambui also known as ‘the human calculator’ for her prowess in solving complex mathematical questions off head urged players   in the industry to urgently work on inspiring students to embrace the simplicity of the subject.

She further said that the subject is applicable in almost all activities in the human life hence its importance.

Her sentiments were echoed by Mang’u Girls high Gladys Mwangi who blamed the bad perception to bad attitude, lack of mentors and sometimes baseless hate for the subject.

John Kagwe, an expert from Kenya Mathematics Initiative and who has taught the subject for ten years said his initiative will continue to set exams that will assist learners to get to the deeper areas of the subject.

The challenge, at its initial stages brought together over 32 public and private schools from across the country.

Over 750 pupils took part in the two hours per paper challenge that saw Mountain View Academy carry the day as the best school.
