After the battle for State House between deputy president William Ruto and Raila Odinga, the next is that of governorship with already a number of candidates already warming up to be sworn as county chiefs.
The county plum slot has attracted new and old faces with those serving last term going for senate slot or lobbying to be appointed to the cabinet in case their favourite presidential candidate wins.
Those at the pole position to win are Isaac Ruto (Bomet), Joseph Ole Lenku (Kajiado), Granton Samboja (Taita Taveta), Fernardez Barasa (Kakamega), Paul Otwoma (Busia), George Natembeya (Trans Nzoia), Anyang Nyong’o (Kisumu), Evans Kidero (Homa Bay) and Johnstone Sakaja (Nairobi).
Isaac Ruto’s opponent Hillary Barchok is feeling the heat on the ground. Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir (ODM) is likely to succeed Governor Hassan Joho although former senator Hassan Omar of UDA is a big headache.
Senator Kimani Wamatangi of UDA is the front-runner in Kiambu but governor James Nyoro cannot be under rated. In Bungoma, the battle is between Kenneth Lusaka (Ford-K) and Governor Wycliffe Wamangati (Dap-K).
In Nakuru, Governor Lee Kinyanjui has a head-start against Senator Susan Kihika.
In Siaya, Senator James Orengo is battling former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo and things are not good for Orengo.
In Kisii county, Governor James Ongwae succession is nasty with Paul Simba Arati, Sam Ongeri (Dap-K), Chris Obure (Jubilee), Ezekiel Ombaki Machogu and Ratemo Onchiri of Usawa Party. In Uasin-Gishu Jonathan Bii alias Koti Moja of UDA is ahead of Bundotich Zedekiah Kiprop alias Buzeki.
In Kirinyaga Anne Waiguru is facing Purity Ngirici, Meru (Kiraitu Murungi and Mithika Linturi), Murang’a (Irungu Kang’ata and Jamleck Kamau) and Makueni (Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and Patrick Musimba).
In Kwale the battle is between Fatuma Achani (UDA), Luganzi Chai (Paa), Hamadi Boga (ODM) Chirau Mwakwere (Wiper), Sammy Ruwa (independent) and Gereza Dena (Kanu).
Kilifi governor race has Aisha Jumwa, Gideon Mung’aro and lawyer George Kithi. In Embu the governor battle is between Cecily Mbarire (UDA) Emilio Kithuri (Jubilee), Njagi Kumantha (independent) and Lenny Kivuti. The battle is between Mbarire and Kivuti.
In Tharaka Nithi the race has governor Muthomi Njuki of (UDA) Mzalendo Kibunja (Narc-K), Nyamu Kagwima (Wiper), Gatari Mbiuki and Erastus Njoka. Njoka is giving Njuki sleepless nights.
