The macadamia farmers may suffer prolonged cash crunch after Trade, Industry and Investments Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria imposed a one-year suspension in the exportation of raw macadamia nuts in a bid to open up the markets.

Speaking in Kagio town, Kirinyaga County after distributing food stuffs to the elderly, Kuria said the macadamia law will have been suspended for a year-until the buyers come up with a better price that will improve the livelihoods of Macadamia farmers.

However, the well-intended government policy pronounced by Kuria maybe counterproductive to farmers who rely on the cash crop for economic sustenance.

The CS claimed that a few individuals have begun to oppress farmers by buying the crop at a lower cost which was not the intention when the Act was introduced.

He said this will also enable other factories from other countries to buy the product hopefully at higher cost.
