Depression is a mental health disorder that affects many. The World Health Organisation estimates that more than 264 million people worldwide suffer from depression.

It is a silent killer since it starts off as subtle with many assuming it’s just mood swings and/or stress from handling the challenges life throws at them.

Patients suffering from severe depression, if untreated, have been known to commit suicide with the WHO putting it at 800,000, the number of people who commit suicide every year.

Being a mental disorder, it doesn’t have obvious physical symptoms but some changes in behaviour can be a sign of depression. Below are some of the signs to watch out for. These symptoms vary in intensity depending on if the patient is mildly, moderately or severely depressed.

Remember that a proper diagnosis from a trained medical practitioner is necessary to ensure the patient gets the necessary care.

1. Change in mood

While mood swings are normal among all of us, when they are severe and frequent can be a sign of the onset of depression. Anxiety, loss of interest in activities you once loved, feelings of sadness, guilt and hopelessness should be discussed with a therapist.

2. Change in appetite

Depression can be coupled with excessive hunger or loss of appetite. This results in either not eating at all or looking at food as a source of comfort. As such, patients can put on a lot of weight or lose it as a result of their eating habits.

3. Wavering sleep patterns

Do you struggle with insomnia? Or have been feeling excessively sleepy all the time? Maybe you only manage a couple of hours of sleep every night. Depression patients often have disrupted sleeping patterns leading to fatigue and having little energy making it harder to perform your normal duties.

4. Cognitive changes

Patients who are suffering from depression sometimes have a low concentration span. They are unable to perform a task to completion or they do it half-heartedly, as if their mind isn’t there at all. They move slower as a result of their low energy levels. They question the meaning of life and have feelings of self-hatred making it impossible for them to put in any effort in their work, at home or relationships.

If you notice these types of changes, consult a doctor.

5. Behaviour change

People who are depressed sometimes cry a lot and can be very irritable. They isolate themselves preferring to stay in a cocoon. This behaviour further fuels the feeling of loneliness and can serve to enhance suicidal thoughts.

The symptoms above may come in episodes, last a number of days after which the patient goes back to their usual behaviour.
