Five killed in bus-matatu crash at Kitui-Kanyonyo junction in Yatta Sub County

At least five passengers perished yesterday after a Mandera bound bus was involved in a head on collision with a matatu at the Kitui-Kanyonyo junction along the Nairobi–Garissa highway yesterday night.

The bus under Kuku sacco was enroute to Mandera at 1920 hours while the 14 seater matatu belonging to KINA sacco was moving from Kitui direction, an opposite direction the bus was heading when they crashed.

Traffic officers from Matuu Police Station responded swiftly and moved to the scene for rescue operation and to control the traffic build up.

In June last year, at the Kanyonyo junction black spot, eleven people lost their lives after the overloaded matatu they were traveling in overloaded, veered off the road and rolled several times killing eleven people.

The drive fled the scene immediately after.

The matatu was ferrying people who were coming from a dowry negotiation ceremony in Mwingi.

He said the matatu lost control as it attempted to overtake another vehicle.

The bodies of those who succumbed were moved to the Kitui Level 4 Hospital Mortuary.

Scores of those injured were taken to the same facility as well as Matuu Level 4 Hospital in Machakos, and the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.
