NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 2 – FKF Premier League champions Tusker FC will head to Garissa while AFC Leopards will take on a University side and record champions Gor Mahia play a team from ‘Baba’s bedroom’ after the first round draw of the FKF Cup was conducted on Thursday.
Tusker who reached the quarter final of the 2020-21 edition will take on Garissa’s Berlin FC while Leopards take on Zetech University.
Berlin, former winners of the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom tournament are however set to decide on whether to host the game at Meru’s Kinoru Stadium, if their Berlin Stadium home turf
Gor Mahia will take on Third Division side Kibera Soccer FC.
The tournament will begin in the round of 16 stage with 32 teams having registered, with Match Day One tentatively penciled for February 11.
“We are looking forward to a great tournament. We are speaking to several prospective sponsors to see if we can have some good financial backing for the tournament but as we know it has not been easy,” said FKF Chief Executive Officer Barry Otieno.
He added; “We need to have the winner of the tournament by June 30 when we have been given the deadline by CAF to submit the winner. We are working to ensure that we have a sponsor who will help us have some good monetary reward.”
The tournament, whose winner plays in the CAF Confederation Cup, was not held last season by the Caretaker Committee that was tasked with running football in the absence of the Federation.
Meanwhile in other interesting fixtures, the Siaya based Michael Olunga Foundation Academy will take on KCB FC while Kenya Police will face off with Nairobi-based Scarlet FC.
