NAIROBI, Kenya Feb 13 – Former Wildlife Principal Secretary Susan Koech has been nominated to the post of the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya.
Tuesday’s Senate Order Paper indicates that Speaker Amason Kingi is expected to convey the message from President William Ruto and give direction on when her Approval Hearing will be conducted before the House votes on her suitability to take up the post.
Both Houses of Parliament are expected to resume sitting tomorrow(Tuesday) following a three-month break.
Susan’s appointment is expected to fill a leadership vacuum at the CBK which has been without a second deputy governor for the past seven years.
This was in breach of the law and it attracted the attention of the Office of the Auditor General.
The Central Bank Act provides that there shall be two Deputy Governors who shall be appointed by the President through a transparent and competitive process and with the approval of Parliament.
The Deputy Governors shall hold office for a term of four years, but shall be eligible for re-appointment for one further term of four years.
Sheila M’Mbijjewe has served as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya since 2015.
The Deputy Governors shall perform such functions as the Governor may from time to time assign to them.
In December, ten candidates had been shortlisted to fill the position of Second Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).
They included James Lopoyetum, Susan Koech, Micheal Mwebesa, Former Capital Markets Authority (CMA) Chief Executive Officer Paul Muthaura, and Munir Ahmed.
Others were former Higher Loans Education Board CEO Charles Ringera, Jean Awinja, Gerald Arita, Rose Ngugi, and Fredrick Oyugi.
