The Derby County manager’s impending return to the Blues has been greeted with mixed reactions, with some questioning his managerial experience.

The Englishman has just a year of football management under his belt, having made his debut as Derby boss last season.

Burley now believes the Chelsea legend is inexperienced to take over such a big role at the west London club.

“This will work for a certain period in terms of knitting together and appeasing fans”, he told the Sports Bar.

“But ultimately, same as [Manchester] United and Solskjaer and anybody who brings in a former player with little experience, is it’s going to come down to the results,” he continued.

Burley, who spent eight years at Stamford Bridge from 1989-1997 contends fans could turn on Lampard should he fail to live up to his billing.

“If your’re going to Stamford Bridge next season and Chelsea lose five or six on the bounce – and I’m not suggesting that could happen but it could. Then the fans are going to turn,” he declared.

Meanwhile, Derby have since given Lampard permission to talk to the Blues about taking the vacant manager’s job.
