Galaxy A50 picks up July security update in Kenya, May update for Galaxy Tab S4

A few days ago, one of our readers bought a Samsung Galaxy A50 and found the device’s security patch level was dated May 2019. This did not bode well with them and they sought to know if this was an isolated case or not.

No, it wasn’t! The Kenyan variant of the Galaxy A50 has been stuck on May 2019 security patches for quite some time now. Despite the June update rolling out to the A50 in some markets, it never made it to the local variant.

But the wait is finally over. We’ve stumbled upon a new firmware for the Galaxy A50 model sold in Kenya as version A505FDDU2ASG4. The update installs July 2019 security patch to the device and perhaps more.

We say perhaps more because the Kenyan variant missed out on the June update that introduced night mode and super slow-motion video shooting mode to the Indian model. Granted, this incoming July update should be bundled with these features. You’ll let us know.

Also receiving a new software update in the country is the Galaxy Tab S4 (LTE). Arriving as version T835JXU3BSF2 and based on Android Pie, the new update bumps the security patch level to May 1, 2019.

Although far off the latest August security patch, the fact that the Galaxy Tab S4 is coming from March security patch level should mean something for owners of this slate. But with the Galaxy Tab S6 among us, the Tab S4’s software updates future looks bleak, although it should still receive Android Q update.

Both the Galaxy A50 and Tab S4 are receiving their new updates over the air (OTA). Typically, OTA updates may take days before all units receive the download notification, so be patient while you wait.
