Ghana is set to relaunch its national airline. This comes after signing a provisional order for three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners at the recently concluded Dubai Airshow. The acquisition will cost the country a list price of $877.5 million.

In addition, Ghana also provisionally ordered six Bombardier Dash 8-400 aircrafts from Canada’s De Havilland.

With this, the country hopes to launch a new airline by early 2020 with flights to Europe, North America and Asia. The airline will also fly regional routes within Africa.

According to Ghana’s Minister of Aviation, Joseph Kofi Adda, the government will hold a 10% stake in the airline while the private sector will hold the rest.

Ghana International Airlines (GIA) was the country’s former national airline whose operations were suspended on 13th May 2010. They had a single Boeing 757-200 which flew to Dusseldorf, Johannesburg, and London.

Existing Ghanaian airlines do not currently fly to any intercontinental destinations. For example, Africa World Airlines commenced operations in 2012, and only operates a fleet of eight Embraer ERJ-145 aircrafts.
