Gor Mahia defender Joash Onyango has been named the 2019/LG Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) player of the year after assisting K’Ogalo in lifting their 18th KPL title last season.
Following his exemplary performance in the domestic league, the 26-year-old represented Kenya in the 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations but suffered a serious injury prior to the tourney.

The Harambee stars ace was awarded KSh 1.25 million as well as an LG 55-inch smart television, accompanied by a massive trophy for his brilliant performance in 2018.

Onyango faced stiff competition from his former teammate Francis Kahata and Golden boot winner Enosh Ochieng who earned awards in other categories.
The Gor Mahia defender famously rose to popularity when he dyed his beard white before AFCON, with fans nicknaming the 26-year-old ‘Old man Joash’, owing to his new-look that he hurriedly got rid of.

Onyango also emerged as best defender while Kahata, now playing his trade in Tanzania with Simba SC, was named best midfielder.

Faruk Shikalo earned the golden glove award after an impressive 13 clean sheet while ex-Gor mahia coach Hassan Oktay was named coach of the year.
The new young player award went to striker David Majak of Tusker FC who also had an excellent sender under his belt last year.
