NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 5 – Record champions Gor Mahia survived a scare from third tier side Kibera Soccer FC, beating them 1-0 to progress to the second round of the MozzartBet FKF Cup at the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
Lloyd Khavuchi scored the lone goal of the match in the first half, with the Division One side’s biggest undoing being their lack of composure in the final third, when it mattered most.
Khavuchi scored in the 33rd minute of the match, sweeping home a low effort from the left after being played through by John Macharia.
Before that, the chances were not as much with Kibera doing their best to contain the FKF Premier League leaders.
They had some chances with Mark Kithome having a go at goal with a shot from range that was well collected by Gor keeper Caleb Otieno.
Kithome had a brilliant opportunity four minutes to halftime when he raced through on goal one on one, but keeper Otieno blocked his effort.
In the second half, Kibera had most of the chances. Austin Otieno floated a cross into the area in the 54th minute, but Javan Mukoya’s connection was deflected for a corner.
On the hour mark, Edwin Obera who had been a live wire since coming on broke through on the right but his shot hit the side netting.
Three minutes later, he was denied by a brilliant save from Caleb from his curling effort off a freekick.
On the other end, Austin Odhiambo who had come off the bench for Gor had chances, after dribbling into the box, but he couldn’t execute well.
