The government has dismissed claims that it has abandoned the school laptop project.
Education Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang says the Laptop project was one of the three phases in the digital literacy project, which remains on course despite the challenges it has faced.
The project according the PS is now in its second phase which is building of computer laboratories after a good number of schools were connected with electricity.
He told the National Assembly Committee on Education this morning that 20,000 schools have been connected to the national grid.

Meanwhile, Dr Kipsang has said the transition rate from Primary to Secondary School has increased immensely since the government established a multi sectorial initiative to mop up a number of students who sat last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams and had not reported for admission to form one.
According to the PS, the transition rate currently stands at 93.7 % but efforts are in place to achieve 100% transition.
He also told MPs that the ministry is working with vocational training institutions to achieve the target.
He noted that more needs to be done on infrastructure development considering the increased uptake of student’s.
Elsewhere, Bomet county residents want the County government Act reviewed to enhance fairness in recruitment and employment.
The residents who engaged the Building Bridges Initiative, decried nepotism and favoritism in employment at the county government saying officers employed by the previous regime were being victimized.
The residents of Bomet County further want resource allocation to be done according to the population.
The BBI team is engaging citizens on nine thematic areas, among them devolution, inclusivity, corruption, ethnic antagonism and shared resources.
The 14 member team appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga is also required to engage the private sector, religious organizations, and experts at both County and National level.
