– Maguire sealed his move to Old Trafford in a six-year deal
– He is set to go straight into Man United’s squad after being handed the No.5 shirt
– Rio Ferdinand is the most memorable figure to wear the shirt
Manchester United have announced new signing Harry Maguire will wear the iconic No.5 shirt this season.
The shirt number has been vacant for months now after Marcos Rojo ditching it last season for No.16.
“We can officially confirm that our new signing Harry Maguire will wear the no.5 shirt for Manchester United this season,” United said in a statement.
The Englishman sported the No.15 jersey during his two-year stay with the Foxes club captain Wes Morgan occupied No.5.
He has however previously worn No.5 at former clubs Hull City and Sheffield United, but tends to don the no.6 jersey for England during international duty.
A number of distinguished players have worn the No.5 shirt for the Red Devils, including Laurent Blanc and most Rio Ferdinand who wore it for 11 straight seasons.
The signing of Maguire was announced on Monday, August 5, joining United from Premier League side Leicester City in a world record deal for a defender.
Meanwhile, it remains unclear if the Englishman will make his debut for the Red Devils on Sunday, August 11, against Chelsea.
