Kenyan Boxer Daniel Wanyonyi says that he is currently under pressure from boxing fans to beat his arch rival Tanzainan boxer Karim Mandonga aka Mtu Kazi in the upcoming boxing match.
Wanyonyi told Ghetto Radio Sports that the pressure from fans is currently so high that he is planning to move houses.
“I am even planning to move from where I live because of the interest I have from the public and the boxing fans at large,” said Wanyonyi.
According to Wanyonyi the last boxing event earned him a lot of fame in the country and that he is being stopped by many on the streets just to shake his hands.
“After this fight I have become very famous such that I can’t walk around and not being stopped for a chat or a handshake,” he stated.
He has however promised to reclaim Kenya’s boxing glory after he lost the last match which he confesses to have accepted without proper preparations.
“I was not ready for the fight since I had not fought for a long time because of the Covid pandemic I knew I wasn’t ready and I chose to accept the fight because I had underestimated Mandonga.
“You know Mandonga fights like a person who does not know how to fight but at the end of the day, he still throws bouts and in the end wins his matches,” he narrated.
Wanyonyi could not withstand the bouts thrown by Mandonga who knocked him out via a Technical Knockout in the fifth round.
The former African Boxing Champion said that he chose to fight the Tanzanian despite not being fit after a long layoff after Sporting activities were suspended due to Covid pandemic saying that he had underestimated the Mandonga.
Wanyonyi, the former Africa Boxing Union (ABU) champion, is set to take on Kenya’s Mandonga in their rematch slated for 18th March at the Tsavo Ballroom in KICC, Nairobi.
He thanked the organizers of the fight urging promoters to continue staging such high profile fights.
“After this fight I have become very famous such that I can’t walk around and not being stopped for a chat or a handshake. I am even planning to move from where I live because of the interest I have from the Public,” he exclaimed.
Wanyonyi a second hand clothes dealer at the famous Gikomba Market thanked his fellow traders saying that despite the loss they showered him with lots of presents and encouraged him to work hard to reclaim the title.
The fight organized by Solid Rock Promotion is scheduled for the 18th of March at the Tsavo Ballroom in KICC.
The last fight in which was held in January was well attended by an estimated turnout of over 2,500 boxing enthusiasts. they said that they closed ticket sales by 7pm and people still requested for more.
