The problems in the health sector appear to have escalated with the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers calling for a strike in all public hospitals from Friday next week.

The clinical officers are accusing the national and county governments of failing to honor their 2017- 2022 CBA.

This comes as nurses in some counties are on strike demanding implementation of a return to work agreement with county governments.

The clinical officers union has faulted the ministry of health and the county governments for allegedly failing to honor their CBA. It cites frustrations by their employer which they say have led to the collapse of talks on the implementation of the Agreement.

The clinical officers say they have exhausted all alternative dispute resolution mechanisms as provided for by the law and the only option left is industrial action.

In a return to work agreement signed by both parties, on October 5th, 2017, their employers, who include the Ministry of Health and the 47 County governments were to sign a recognition agreement with the union within 60 days.

They were also to work on the implementation of 2017-2022 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Kenya national union of nurses on Friday sustained their push to have county governments honor the 2017 return to work formula with nurses.

The union through its secretary general Seth Panyako Issued a schedule of counties that will begin their strike on diverse dates should the county government fail to honor the return to work agreement.

Among the counties are Samburu, Kirinyanga, Embu, Muranga, Busia, Nakuru, Siaya, Narok, Makueni, Bomet, Tanariver and Kakamega.

The latest strike threat dampens the government’s ambitious affordable healthcare program under the big four agenda.

It is now a game of wait and see if they will follow through with their strike threat.
