Late former vice-president Joseph Sane Murumbi never sold his Muthaiga posh mansion to the government in 1977. It has emerged from close family members, Murumbi was still occupying the mansion till his demise in June 1990.
Sources say, powerful people grabbed the Muthaiga North property measuring 4.5 acres.
Murumbi’s Muthaiga land LR no 214/405 was grabbed by three individuals namely former Lands Commissioner Wilson Gachanja and his wife Elizabeth Gitiri through their company Soneth Ltd, Jonathan Kipkirui arap Sawe, a former Home Affairs PS and Gideon Moi, Baringo senator.

When Murumbi was sick and on wheelchair, Gachanja, Moi and Sawe subdivided the original LR no into three plots each measuring 1.76 acres and created new LR nos 209/11274 allocated to Gachanja thorugh Soneth Ltd, LR no 209/11275 allocated to Gideon who later sold it to Jaysukhlal Vinay Sanghrajka and LR no 209/11276 allocated to Sawe.
Another plot was Kenya National Archivet number LR no 214/405 that was subsequently been subdivided into three plots of 0.704 acres each whose new numbers are LR no 209/11274, allocated to Soneth Limited of P O Box 47700, Nairobi, LR no 209/11275 allocated to Gideon of P O Box 30510, Nairob and LR No 209/11276 allocated to Leonard Kipkirui arap Sawe of P O Box 2037, Nakuru.

When Murumbi heard that his house had been demolished, rare trees felled and plot subdivided, it is said, he went to see by himself.
Upon seeing what has been done to his property, he developed cardiac arrest and died on June 22 1999, the same day the trio got their new title deeds.
The Murumbi family which has been looked down upon for unexplained reasons Weekly Citizen has established is in possession of documents which show that the former VP never sold the Muthaiga facility to anyone.
The widow Sheila Ann Murumbi later even wrote several complaint letters to the three persons.
Another of Murumbi’s property in Riara Ridge was later transferred by lawyers to Commercial Bank of Africa under unclear circumstances upon. The bank is associated to the Kenyatta family. Sheila’s died in October 2000 giving lawyers field day to sell Murumbi’s properties in Nairobi, Nyali in Mombasa and Kilgoris. Deputy president has been linked to the grab of Murumbi prime Kilgoris land.
