NAIROBI, Kenya, May 3 – Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, and current President of African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation (AFRIPOL-AU) General Assembly, is in Tunisia for a two-day official visit to preside over the 11th AFRIPOL-AU Steering Committee Meeting.
This meeting follows the 10th AFRIPOL-AU Steering Committee meeting held in Nairobi last year and was officially opened by the Minister of Interior for the Republic of Tunisia, H.E.M Kamel FEKI.
During the opening ceremony, Koome expressed his gratitude to the Government of Tunisia for their hospitality and support in hosting the AFRIPOL-AU Steering Committee meeting.
Similarly, the key speakers addressing the opening session reiterated the importance of AFRIPOL-AU in championing the much-needed cooperation among law enforcement agencies within Africa to effectively combat transnational organized crimes, terrorism, and cybercrime.
Also present were several dignitaries including the General Director of National Security in Tunisia, Mourad Saidan; Director General Policia Algeria, Farid Bencheikh; Ambassador Jalel CHELBA-Ag. Executive Director, AFRIPOL-AU, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security representative Peter Otim, and several Police Chiefs from the African Regional Police Chiefs Organizations.
Algeria is the headquarters of AFRIPOL-AU, which is the AU technical institution with the mandate to strengthen cooperation between Police agencies of the AU Member States in the prevention and fight against organized transnational crimes, terrorism, and cybercrime.
The Steering Committee is AFRIPOL’s executive body responsible for implementing the decisions of the General Assembly, currently chaired by IG Koome on behalf of Kenya.
