A student from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) who recently attempted to sneak into State House before being shot and injured has reportedly gone missing from the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

A Nairobi court on Tuesday heard that Brian Bera, who was admitted at the facility to receive treatment for his gunshot wound, could no longer be traced.

The court further heard that police officers stationed outside Bera’s hospital room were also nowhere to be found.

According to the Nation, Milimani Law Courts Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi has since directed Kilimani police chief Michael Muchiri to table before the court a report on the circumstances under which Bera went missing from the facility.

State House on June 11, 2019, released a statement saying the 5th year Mechanical Engineering student was shot and wounded on the left shoulder by officers manning the gate after he drew a knife when he was challenged to stop.

“State House is a designated protected area under the Protected Areas Act. For that reason no person is allowed access to the premise without the permission of the prescribed authority,” read the statement from State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena.

In a later exclusive interview on Citizen TV, David Bera – Brian’s father – said his son is an intelligent student and needs medication to enable him to finish university since he is mentally sick.

“This young man…my son… can contribute a lot to this nation and to the Kenyan community if he is treated. He is resourceful,” Mr. Bera said.

Mr. Bera, who lives in Kitale, further noted that his son had always been a ‘humble’ and studious boy which saw him go to Nairobi School where he attained grade ‘A’ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

It is from there, he said, that he joined the JKUAT to study Mechanical Engineering.

“He, however, developed a character that is unlike him in his 3rd year…he isolated himself most of the time…he withdrew himself from, from his family, from everybody….that is when the sickness started,” Mr. Bera admitted.

“The boy has been very sick, mentally…” David Bera explained adding that there were occasions where his son had even attempted to commit suicide.

In 2017, the father added, he began to disappear from their home and they would later be informed by good samaritans that their son was found at a nearby river trying to drown himself.
