Judicial Service Commission has nominated Court of Appeal Judge William Ouko for the Supreme Court Judge position.
JSC Chairperson Prof. Olive Mugenda stated that the decision by the commission was made unanimously.
Ouko’s name has been forwarded to President Uhuru Kenyatta for appointment.
“After deliberations this afternoon and careful consideration of the performance of the various candidates who we interviewed for the position of Judge of the Supreme Court, the Commission has today recommended for appointment Hon. Mr. Justice Ouko William Okello, CBS. EBS, President of the Court of Appeal as Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya and has submitted his name to His Excellency the President for appointment,” said Mugenda.
He will join the Supreme Court to replace Justice Jackton Ojwang who retired in February last year.
“The process has been engaging and rewarding to all the Commissioners who had the opportunity to interact with some of the best legal minds in Kenya in an open process that has revealed the rich legal resource that this country possesses,” said Mugenda.
During his interview held earlier today, Ouko took a swipe at the Supreme Court and JSC accusing the two entities of being tribal.
“Diversity, ethnicity, our time to eat is a very dangerous disease very very dangerous and people say our region… I really don’t have a prescription all I know is that we are very deeply tribal, deeply, deeply, even in this commission, deeply tribal,” said Ouko.
Ouko has a 33 year experience in the legal profession. He joined the judiciary from the lowest level as a magistrate.
