A section of Jua Kali artisans now want the government to help them get official working spaces besides the proposed certificates.
They youth claim that they are currently carrying out their businesses in open fields that are bound for reoccupation by the government.
President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday instructed Education CS Geirge Magoha to work out a policy framework that will ensure jua kali artisans and crafts men are issued with certificates.
Uhuru stated that this way, the artisans will be able to competitively compete for jobs that will improve their livelihoods and skills.
“We are pleading with the President to consider the environment we are carrying out our duties, Let him built for us a place where our customers can easily access us,” said John Nandwa.
Nandwa added that the open fields are also exposing them to harsh working conditions, illnesses and accidents.
“We are being rained on, they absorb all the all sun heat, while others are working along the roadside risking their lives. Most customers have left us because of working environment as majority don’t like it,” he said.
The Jua Kali workers on the other hand appreciated the move by the government to provide them with certificates as it will act as a job security to majority of the youths with artisan skills.
“The president will help us much by providing certificates to those of us with the required skills. Majority of youths have skills but lack certificate to certify their capabilities to enable them secure job opportunities,” said another jua kali worker.
