If there is a boogeyman of Kenyan music, it would be DJ Pinye.
This is the guy the OGs of the music industry point an accusing finger at when asked what they think is wrong with the music industry.
I, however, do not think he gets the accolades he deserves.
DJ Pinye, while it is true he was ham-fisted with his standards, is the reason Kenyan music elevated its video quality but not everyone sees it from this perspective.
And right at the bottom of the list of DJ Pinye fans would be the earliest crop of Kenyan artistes.
Back then DJ Pinye had a huge say on whether or not your music video would get airplay on NTV’s The Beat show.
How do I know?
Well, let’s just say being old is not a crime -yet.
DJ Pinye would select the video that would play and more often than not, he would snub local artiste’s videos.
Think about it, as hilarious and entertaining as Luche Production’s videos were (Calif records videos) they barely got any play on NTV.
Anyway, who better to speak about the legacy DJ Pinye has than an elder statesman of Kenyan music, actually, than the OG of Genge, Jua Cali himuselfu?
