KAKAMEGA, Kenya, Mar 7 – Over Sh700 million has been used by Kakamega County government to procure subsidized fertilizers and climate-resilient maize seeds for farmers in the region.

According to the area governor Fernandes Barasa, the move will create a huge impact and boost food production.

The governor said that the county has procured a total of 240,000 bags of subsidized fertilizer (50kg) and 130,000 bags of maize seeds (2kg) worth Sh713 million.

“We have purchased these farm inputs for the benefit of our people and to increase food production. I encourage all farmers to buy the inputs which are available at ward administrator’s offices,” said Barasa.

The governor was speaking Monday in Kholera ward, Matungu Sub County while distributing 15,000(50kg) bags of fertilizer and 7500 (2kg) maize seeds worth Sh45 million to the locals.

The governor said his government has stepped up efforts to make the region a leading food basket and encouraged farmers to use improved farm input for better harvest.

The governor also advised farmers to diversify agricultural production to increase their profit margins and spread the risks.

A 50kg of subsidized fertilizer retails at shillings 2,970 and a 2kg packet of maize seeds is Sh300.
