KCPE 2019: The exam results in numbers

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha on Monday announced the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results where the top candidate scored 440 marks.

Andy Michael Munyiri emerged the top performer, followed by the trio of Flavian Onyango (Chakol Girls), June Cheptoo Koech (Sangalo Central) and Sean Michael Ndung’u (Kitengela International School) with 439 marks.

1,083,456 candidates sat for the 2019 KCPE examinations, out of which 543,000 were boys and 539,874 girls.

The number of candidates scoring 400 marks and above dropped to 9,770 (0.90%) from 11,559 (1.10%) last year.

There was however a rise in the number of candidates scoring between 301 and 400 marks, growing to 243,320 (22.46%) from 223,862 (21.27%) last year.

566,886 pupils garnered 201-300 marks, 262,307 scored 101-200 marks while the remaining 1,173 scored 001-100 marks.

Nairobi County led with the highest candidature in the examination with 62,498 candidates, followed by Kakamega (54,311) and Nakuru (53,225).

Counties with the lowest candidature were Lamu (2,959), Isiolo (3,454) and Samburu (4,793)

The number of candidates who were absent increased by 2,322 (58.78%), from 3,950 in 2018 to 6,272 in the 2019 KCPE examination.

The highest number of absent candidates was recorded in Meru (407) and Turkana (385).

The number of under-age candidates increased from 15,747 (1.48%) in 2018 to 20,086 (1.84%) in 2019, with Bungoma recording the highest number at 1,770, followed by Bomet (1,111), and Kericho (1,144).

Turkana and Garissa, on the other hand, took the top two spots in cases of over-age candidates (above 19 years) with 4,013 and 1,957 respectively, and Kilifi coming third with 3,716.

According to CS Magoha, traditional forms of cheating were wiped out, with only four candidates being disqualified for impersonation.

English Composition and Insha scripts were marked by 5,795 examiners.

181,016 contracted professionals were involved in the administration of the 2019 KCPE examination, including; 27,809 centre managers; 28,014 supervisors; 66,807 invigilators; 58,060 security officers; 2,800 examination management directors; 479 clerks; 6,987 drivers.
