NYERI, Kenya, Aug 28 — The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has renewed its opposition to mandatory contributions to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) by its members terming the move as unjust.
KNUT noted that its membership contributes retirements benefits to a Provident Fund and thus NSSF subscription were unnecessary.
Speaking in Nyeri on Monday, KNUT National Chairperson James Karinga said the union will instead push for reforms to expedite payment of retirement benefits to teachers.
“Our members are deducted their retirement benefits through Provident Fund we do not know why they are being asked to register as nssf members,” said Karinga.
“Asking a teacher to visit pension officers is a bother. Teachers should be paid before leaving service,” he said.
Karinga also faulted the involvement of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) in to determine pay rises for teachers outside the framework of Collective Bargaining Agreements between teachers’ unions and the Teachers Service Commission.
“For us as a union we cannot recognise any increment through SRC. This must be agreed between us and TSC. We will ignore whatever is thrown our way by SRC,” he said.
