The teaching fraternity is in mourning following the death of Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) second vice national chairman John Wesonga on Thursday.
Mr Wesonga succumbed to colon cancer at Nairobi West Hospital.
“He will be remembered as a great trade unionist,” said Knut General Secretary Collins Oyuu.
Mr Oyuu said Mr Wesonga served as Knut general secretary in the larger Butere/Mumias branch before taking over the Mumias branch after it was split into two.
He also served as provincial secretary of the Western Provincial Council before becoming a member of the National Executive Council and eventually being elected to the current position of second vice national chairman, where he served until his death.
“On behalf of the National Steering Committee, the National Executive Council (NEC) and the entire teaching fraternity, I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time,” the general secretary added.
Other leaders and teachers joined Mr Oyuu in mourning Mr Wesonga.
“I stand with the family of Mwalimu Wesonga and the people of Matungu constituency during these very difficult times. A leader per excellence. He would never miss out on an educational function,” said Kakamega senator Dr Boni Khalwale.
