The Kenya Wildlife Service has successfully translocated three orphaned elephant calves to the Sera Wildlife Conservancy, Samburu County where they will be released to the wild.

The three bulls aged between three and half and four were rescued at a tender age and taken to Reteti Elephant Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre.

The initiative, a first such re-wilding for a community managed wildlife facility is applying a soft release for three orphaned elephant calves who had been separated and weaned in preparation for release to the wild.

In a statement, Kenya Wildlife Service indicated that the approach entails releasing the calves in a temporary holding Boma in Sera wildlife conservancy and eventually releasing them into the conservancy.

The three orphaned bulls are; 4 year old Warges 4 years rescued from Wamba in (Samburu); Sosian, aged 3.7 rescued from Sosian (Laikipia) and Lingwesi aged 3.5 rescued from Ilngwesi (Laikipia).

The conservancy was selected due to its to proximity to the Reteti rescue facility where the bulls had been sheltered after being rescued as well as its perimeter electric fence which keeps them safe from large predators such as lions.
