Kenyan entertainment industry is really growing. Gone are the days where production was purely in house with one set.
Now local series production houses have gone an extra mile to compete with their international counterparts. This effort is paying off with some local work being aired on platforms such as Netflix.
The likes of Philit Productions have been working so hard to produce content that is worth watching season after season. Series’ that you would binge watch and look forward to the next season.
Most of the local content with quality production have been picked up by Maisha Magic and they air them daily.
Maisha Magic had a plan to distribute local content and so far so good.
Here are a few local series you need to keep up with either on Maisha Magic, Showman or Citizen Tv.
- Selina
The show revolves around Selina an intelligent young woman of humble beginnings who has excelled in her fourth form exams and is bound to join the university. Her mischievous stepmother, Kristina, crafts a wicked plot to sell her off to work as a maid for the Mackenzies, putting on hold her dreams to pursue further education. Despite being between a rock and a hard place, Selina wins favor with her employers for having a golden touch to whatever she puts her hand on.
2. Pete
In a bid to succeed the Funzi Chief, a rift ensues between his two sons: MBURA and JASIRI. As Mbura struggles to have a grip on the chieftaincy, Jasiri pursues the apple of his eye, Nuru. As Nuru dilly-dallies, a mermaid, SAFIRA, comes to the island in search of the ring (Pete), and on noticing Jasiri, wins him to her side. The struggle for love and the ring takes twists and turns.
3. Sue Na Jonnie
In an attempt to put Johnny real away, Sue, Jonnie and company accidentally end up committing a capital offense. Unfortunately for them, there has been a pair of unwanted ears all along, silently listening in on their criminal activities. Things get extremely rough for them.
4. New Beginnings
New Beginnings is a Kenyan soap opera that takes love, envy, lust and deceit as the main thematic concerns. It stars Maya Hayakawa, Joed Kariuki, Neville Misati, Diana Nderitu and Habida Ebo.
5. Moyo
Shekuwe and Momo’s marriage is not a bed of roses. Their daughter, Leila is rebellious and cannot withstand her mother’s unfaithfulness towards her father. To complete a business deal, Shekuwe must marry Asha, a village girl who is already in love with somebody else; Moody, an X-convict and the ‘bastard’ son to MOMO – a secret she is yet to reveal.
6. Azizia
Aziza is a Swahili drama series aired on Citizen TV every Wednesday at 7.30pm. Its main character is Sanaipei Tande, a singer in real life and also in the program.
