A man is expected to take a plea today, Thursday, November 28, over allegations that he assaulted and injured his pregnant wife for returning home late.
Ferdinand Geoffrey Ombulu, from Ruaraka in Nairobi, allegedly beat up and inflicted grievous harm on his five-month pregnant wife Damaris Wanja on Tuesday last week.
Appearing before Makadara Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga last Thursday, the accused admitted that he battered his wife because she returned home at 11 pm, which he termed as “too late”.
When he took his unconscious wife to Ruaraka Health Centre mid-last week, neighbors frog-marched him to a Ruaraka police post where he was arrested.
Wanja was transferred to Nairobi Women’s Hospital in critical condition and later taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital’s high dependency unit.
The court heard that Wanja was tortured and sustained severe fractures in her right hand and right leg.
“It is believed he had tortured the victim for a lengthy period before taking her to hospital,” said Corporal Damaris Gwendo, who is handling the case.
Gwendo sought 10 days to complete investigations but Makadara Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga granted her seven days.
