An Administration Police officer stationed at Lafey camp in Mandera has lost a gun which was in his possession under unclear circumstances.
Constable Elvis Karani reported losing one AK-47 rifle serial number 59014147 from his unit hut.
Mr Karani shares the hut with Mr Muhamed Hussein Hillow, a police reservist who is now the prime suspect in the matter.
Mr Hillow and Ahmed Adan Ibrahim, a second suspect, were arrested on January 14 while loitering at Lafey market a day after Mr Karani lost the gun.
The two were brought to the Mandera magistrate’s court on Wednesday with police requesting to hold them for five days in order to conclude investigations before charging them.
A sworn affidavit by Mr Benson Lenaiki, a DCI officer, indicated that police strongly believe that the two were involved in the loss of the gun.
Since the suspects had been in police custody for more than 48 hours, Mandera Senior Resident Magistrate Peter Areri only allowed the police to hold them for two days.
“I find the respondents have spent more than 48 hours in custody and by taking that into account, I will allow them to be detained for two more days,” he ruled.
The suspects will be produced in court on Friday.
