Mark Ronson, the DJ and music producer behind hits like ‘Valerie’, has revealed that he is attracted to a person’s intellect first and foremost, and identifies as sapiosexual. He made the announcement during a recent appearance on talk show Good Morning Britain, following a segment on sapiosexuality, which sparked a discussion between him and host Kate Garraway.

“I didn’t know there was a word for it, but yeah, I was really enjoying that segment,” Ronson said. “We were all arguing back in the dressing room with your producers… Yes, I feel like I identify as sapiosexual.”

Sapiosexuality refers to attraction based solely or primarily on intelligence. It doesn’t necessary elide physical attraction, but for a sapiosexual, somebody’s appearance is not the primary source of appeal. During the segment on the show, writer and journalist Nichi Hodgson spoke about her own journey towards identifying with that term, and how her attraction to somebody’s mind has led to her dating people of all genders.

“The definition of sapiosexuality means intelligence first,” she said. “I have dated men, women, trans men, trans women, and across the gender spectrum and identify now as bisexual,” she added. “The thing that has linked all these people has been their brains… We know that a certain percentage of the population is also sapiosexual. They just might not know it themselves, because we haven’t used the term before.”

In the same interview, Ronson spoke about his recent divorce from his wife Joséphine de La Baume, as well as his friendship with pop star Miley Cyrus, with whom he collaborated on ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’.

While several outlets reported that Ronson had “come out” as sapiosexual during the interview, some members of the LGBTQ+ community have since stated that sapiosexuality is not a sexual orientation in itself, and using it as such erases the identities of bisexual, pansexual, and demisexual people.
