Nairobi, Kenya, Feb 24 – The once powerful Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi is today expected at the DCI headquarters where he was summoned by detectives for leading a misinformation campaign in the media that his house had been raided by police.
Matiangi was summoned in a letter by Michael Sang, a Senior Superintendent of police attached to the DCI Headquarters, Serious Crime Unit, who wants him to appear before him on Friday at 9:30am.
“I have reasons to believe that you, Dr. Fred Matiangi, the former Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Interior and National Co-ordination, is connected to the offence or has information which can assist me in my investigations,” the officer said in the summons also shared with the media.
Last week, the DCI boss Amin Mohammed announced investigation had shown Matiangi lied that more than 200 police officers had raided his home in Karen and vowed action.
He admitted that Matiangi was under investigation over undisclosed offences, but said he was yet to be summoned or his home raided.
But it was the allegations Matiangi made through his lawyers led by Danstan Omari that angered the state that has now summoned him to record a statement for misleading Kenyans.
Just last week, detectives investigating Matiangi’s claim made a dramatic raid at his home where they pulled the gate open with a Landcruiser when guards declined to open.
The officers sid they were looking for CCTV footage to verify Matiangi’s claim.
Thursdday’s summons indicated that Matiangi is under investigations for allegations of Publication of False Information contrary to section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act 2018 among other offences in regard to the alleged raid at his home on February 9.
He has been warned that he will be arrested and prosecuted if he fails to honour the summons.
His lawyer Omari is also in trouble for perpetuating the same lies.
“I have reasons to believe that you, Danstan Omari, an Advocate of the High court of Kenya, is connected to the offence or has information which can assist me in my investigations,” read a notice served on Tuesday read in part.
During the alleged raid which authorities denied, Omari who addressed the media from Matiangi’s Karen home claimed that his client’s life was at risk and accused police of harassment.
“We don’t know the intention of wanting to invade Matiangi’s home at this time of the night. We don’t know where they want to, we don’t know what offence he has committed arrest him and where they want to take him to,” Omari said.
He claimed that he was accompanied by at least 200 lawyers at Matiangi’s home to protect his client.
“We will remain steadfast to defend our client. We are ready to be arrested all of us so long as Matiangi is safe,” he charged in an event that received live television coverage.
