Prince Harry chose to step back from the royal family rather than Meghan Markle, a new book reportedly claims.

The biography, Finding Freedom, is said to shed new light on the couple’s bombshell decision to quit as senior royals at the beginning of the year.

The 368-page account will reveal how Harry, 35, was the driving force behind the split, the Sun on Sunday reports.

He is even said to dislike the term “Megxit” because it suggests his wife made the decision, sources say.

“The truth is Harry had been unhappy for a long, long time,” a publishing insider told the paper.

“He wanted to move in the direction that they did and had been considering it for more than a year.

“Meghan supported Harry’s decision. But there was more than one occasion where she asked him if he was certain it was what he wanted.”

Harry is said to dislike the phrase ‘Megxit’

The book, written by former showbiz journalist Omid Scobie and royal reporter Carolyn Durand, will be published worldwide on August 11.

It is said to be based on accounts from the royal couple’s friends, and the authors are understood to have been given access to the Sussexes themselves.

Meghan and Harry are now living in a Los Angeles mansion with their baby son Archie, after leaving the UK for Vancouver Island in Canada earlier this year.

They have no royal subsidies and are said to be paying back Sh312 million (£2.4million) at Sh2.3 million (£18,000) a month over 10 years for renovations to Frogmore Cottage.

Actress Meghan has also returned to showbiz, voicing a Disney nature documentary released in March.

Publishers say the book, titled Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, will “dispel the many rumours and misconceptions” which have surrounded the pair.

The couple have just celebrated their second wedding anniversary in Los Angeles

Earlier this week, the couple celebrated their second wedding anniversary, exchanging “very creative and romantic” cotton-themed presents.

They are said to have spent the day at home with Archie, adhering to social distancing and lockdown rules by not celebrating with family and friends.

A source close to the couple told Harper’s Bazaar they spent “quality time with one another and as a family”.
