Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to rescue Mumias Sugar Company from collapse.
“The President should listen to calls from farmers and workers who depend on the company for a livelihood. The government needs to inject more money in it,” the legislator said.
Kenya Power Company disconnected electricity supply to the firm owing to a huge bill.
The parliamentary committee which toured the firm on Wednesday cited turf wars between the board of directors and the management that have hindered plans to get the firm back on its feet.
Vice chairman Godfrey Osotsi said proposals by the House’s Agriculture committee in 2016 on how to revive the company are yet to be implemented.
“Apart from financial constraints, Mumias which has been the leading firm made its last production in February. The company is experiencing low cane supply as a result of poaching,” he said.
