Two lawmakers from the larger Kwale county are reading from different scripts on the gubernatorial succession battle in the 2022 general elections.
Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani(pictured above) has declared his interest to succeed Kwale governor Salim Mvurya whose tenure comes to an end in 2022.
Mwashetani announced he will launch his gubernatorial bid before end of the year when he presided over a fundsdrive in aid of boda boda operators in Kinango constituency.
“My first launch of my campaign strategies will be in Kinango subcounty to ensure the operators are economically empowered,” he stated.

Governor Mvurya

Mwashetani said he welcomes critics from all corners of the county to be ready to face him including Lunganzi Chai who has shown interest in the gubernatorial succession battle.
He spoke when he accompanied William Ruto at a fundsdrive at Mwanda Primary School in Kinango constituency, Kwale county for economic empowerment of women groups in the constituency. Local MP Benjamin Tayari was the host.Tayari urged his constituents not to allow themselves to be drawn into the succession battles saying it is not his priority.
He cautioned his constituents to tread carefully as the gubernatorial succession race could tear the county apart and plunge it into clannism.
The sentiments come barely one week after a section of former county leaders cautioned Mvurya against premature campaigns to front his deputy Fatuma Achani to succeed him.
The former county leaders promised to state their stand next month to chart way forward on the county’s political scene.
