Nairobi Members of County Assembly have passed a motion compelling the county government of Nairobi through the Nairobi Water Supply and Sewerage Company to implement the digitization of metered water.
The MCAs says the move will help the county on wastage, cartels as well as save residents from over billing.
Speaking Ghetto Radio News Clay City MCA Samora Mwaura who sponsored the motion says the technology is friendly to the consumer as one will only need to pay for what they have consumed.
“The digital meters means that if the company has supplied me with water I will be able to pay and vice versa. This will help weed out water cartels, spillage and wastage,” Samora said.
According to the proposed rates, Nairobi residents who consume an average of 15 cubic metres of water per month or 15,000 litres should expect to part with about Sh1,685 up from the current Sh1,241.
This amount is inclusive of sewerage charges – which are 75 per cent of the amount charged on water units consumed – and Sh50 as meter rent.
“The digital water meters is doable because we have private water suppliers who are already doing it, and this will also help solve the problem of billing as well as preventing wastage it has been done in some counties like Machakos let embrace it and save our people from unnecessary billing and it will also help us fight water cartels,” MCA Samora stated.
