A police officer was on April 5, 2023, arrested for allegedly shooting and wounding two people in Nairobi’s Umoja estate.
The shooting incident reportedly occurred after supporters of Embakasi West lawmaker Mark Mureithi Mwenje and his predecessor George Theuri clashed at the constituency’s CDF offices in Umoja 1 area, Nairobi.
According to a police report seen by Nairobi News, the clashes started after unknown youths stormed the offices where another group was clearing structures.
In the ensuing melee, Mwenje’s bodyguard identified as Eli Ojwang, drew his firearm and shot the two victims.
“27-year-old Felician Obilo was shot in the left thigh with the bullet exiting through the buttocks. On the other hand, Eric Angawa, aged 22, sustained injuries on the right ear and lower abdomen,” part of the report read.
The two injured youths were rushed to Mama Kibaki Lucy Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Police officers rushed to the scene and the police constable was disarmed, arrested and his Jericho pistol with 10 rounds of ammunition confiscated.
Five spent cartridges were recovered at the scene. He is expected to be arraigned in court on April 6, 2023.
While addressing members of the press after filling his report, Theuri denied any involvement in the incident saying he was at work when the violence and chaos erupted.
He however claimed he had been informed that the clashes began when a group of youth started destroying structures that had been serving members of the public at the swimming pool area.
On his part, Mwenje blamed his predecessor, claiming his people were at the scene in preparation for a bursary issuance exercise on Thursday.
He blamed Theuri saying that the rival youth affiliated to the former legislator reportedly stormed the swimming pool area where he was clearing structures.
He claimed the rowdy youth were armed with machetes and other crude weapons, attacked them, forcing them to retreat to the library area where they still followed and accosted them.
