The Nakuru County Assembly on Wednesday passed a motion seeking to improve access to education and better health care for children living with autism.

The Bill tabled by Lakeview Ward MCA Karanja Mburu will see funds set aside for construction of classrooms and employment of teachers who will handle therapy for autistic children.

Nakuru County becomes the eighth county to pass the bill after Nairobi, Garissa, Nyandarua, Tharaka Nithi, Baringo among others.

Majority of the MCAs in the assembly said the bill if implemented will help reduce high cost to parents who have been seeking private schools for autistic children.

Mr. Chege Wamaratu, the Director of Public Policies and Special Projects Africa, Autism Lights said that it’s high time Kenyans and the County Governments embrace the Autistic and provide them with skills.

Ms. Mary Kimani, the president Autism Lights, said the classes to be build will see a lot of women relieved of the burden of taking care of the children thus focus on other economic activities.

Autism is the fastest growing neurodevelopmental disorder affecting 1 in 40 individuals in both the pediatric and adult population globally and in Kenya.

Access to education has been cited as one of the most pressing needs for children who are diagnosed with Autism.
