National Irrigation Authority takes over management of Galana Kulalu – KBC

The National Irrigation Authority has taken over the management of the Galana Kulalu 10,000 acre model farm after the premature exit of the Israel Contractor Green Arava.

The Irrigation Authority now seeks seeking financial support of about Ksh 600M from the Government to complete the remaining 15% and hand over the project to the private sector for continuous production.

The Galana Kulalu project is 85% complete.

Currently, the Authority is utilizing the installed Irrigation infrastructure comprising of 20 centre pivots covering an area of 3,300 acres, and 1,800 acres under drip irrigation system for production of Maize and other high-value crops.

The Authority further rehabilitated the intake after it was destroyed by floods of May 2018 and installed 4 pumps at the intake.

The area targeted for progressive cropping for the period between the months of March to September 2020 was 3, 500 acres with 3000 acres under centre pivot and 500 acres under drip.

2,650 acres have already been cropped and a demonstration farm of 10 acres planted. Of the 10 acres, 5 acres have been cropped.

The crops planted in the demonstration farm are bananas, mangoes, cashew nuts, citrus, palm and pineapples.
