NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 24 – The national netball team has refuted claims that they have been stranded at the African Netball Championship in South Africa with Federation boss Immaculate Kabutha saying they are okay and are scheduled to fly back home Thursday night.
There had been widespread claims that the team had failed to pay their hotel bills in South Africa and ‘were playing on empty stomachs’ due to lack of funds.
“I am very surprised at the reports because we have stayed here at a very good hotel and everything with the team is fine. We have not had any problems and the government has really supported us,” Kabutha told Capital Sport on phone from Cape Town, South Africa.
She further added; “These are malicious reports by people who are trying to discredit us and spoil our relationship with the government. I can assure that everything is okay on our end.”
Captain Paril Simiyu further confirmed that the team is okay. “No we are not stranded,” she responded to a query by Capital Sport.
The team is scheduled to leave Cape Town at 1430Hrs (1530hrs EAT) and will land home at 10pm.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed has also refuted the claims that the girls are stranded terming them as malicious.
