As the clock ticks towards 2022 general elections, aspirants eyeing Jomvu parliamentary seat have hit the ground with campaigns aimed at endearing themselves to voters as part of their efforts to unseat the incumbent Badi Twalib.
Badi who is doing his second term continues to have frosty relations with senior and powerful politicians in the port city including Mombasa governor Hassan Joho due to his involvement with the tanga tanga political wing associated with William Ruto.

Joho

Governor Joho who bears overbearing influence on Mombasa county politics has declared total war on the MP, warning that he will not recapture his seat again after betraying his ODM party.
Among those angling to replace Badi in Jomvu includes Kilindini Knut executive secretary Dan Aloo who has already declared interest to vie for the seat come 2022 polls. He contested for the seat as an independent candidate in the last general elections and lost to Badi.
The teacher is said to be having a strong political influence on residents in the constituency.
Aloo is also claimed to be enjoying backing from allies of ODM leader Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta, who see him as the best alter.
The Knut official has in the recent past been spreading his political wings across the constituency in what many see as his attempts to outbalance Badi’s influence and be able to use the handshake to build a political base ahead of 2022 general elections.

Badi

He is said to be capitalising on Badi’s failures to portray himself as the solution to various problems facing residents including the volatile land ownership and lack of piped water. He has organised several demos against cartels in the water supply chain fleecing the constituents.
Jomvu which was hived off the larger Changamwe constituency before the 2013 polls has many unresolved land disputes in the 32 settlement schemes that include Aldina, Kibarani, Ganahola and Maganda. The constituency is home to Bangladesh – the largest informal settlement in Mombasa.
Thousands of residents have also been displaced by heavy transport companies, which have built Container Freight Stations, motor vehicle garages and storage yards without compensating them. Aloo has vowed to ensure those displaced are compensated for their land.
The land on both sides of the Mombasa-Nairobi highway from Jomvu Madafuni, Mwamlai in the South West, Kwa Punda and North East, all the way past Mikanjuni, Zaire, Jomvu Primary School to Mbuyu wa Chapa in Jomvu Kuu, is said to be owned by a few tycoons.
Aloo is using his elaborate network to propel development initiatives like ‘Watoto Wote Shuleni Whatsapp Foundation’ that has seen him work together with the ministry of Education and wellwishers to support children in the constituency to easily and affordably access education since 2018.

Kisumu bodas call for demos against Governor Nyong’o – Weekly Citizen

Published

A section of boda boda operators in Kisumu county has vowed to vote against Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o come 2022 should he defend his seat.

The riders have lambasted the governor of not living to his promise of not taxing them as one of his campaign pledges in 2017 when he was seeking to wrestle the seat from then Governor Jack Ranguma.

Nyongo

They are now planning a demonstration on February 14 as his Valentine’s gift. They have invited Senator Fred Outa to grace the occasion.

Nyong’o during his campaign trails told the boda b oda operators on several occasions that he was not for introducing any tax to them or evicting them from Kisumu central business district as claimed by a section of Nyong’o’s, opponents who were equally campaigning on a platform that if elected as governor, he would drive the boda boda away from the city center.

Nyong’o even coined a song titled “Jamriambo” meaning a liar, while telling the public that those opponents propagating that he would chase away the boda boda operators from the CBD were liars who had nothing to offer for the electorates.

Addressing the press in Kisumu to register their predicament over the move by the county government to tax them Sh500 every month per boda boda operator, they said the county government is not offering them any tangible service that warrants it to charge tax.

The operators claim that they have just been victims of circumstances and have been caught between the political storm pitting the governor and some Kisumu county political leaders on the other.

They claim that after the Kisumu county women representative Rosa Buyu came up with a project to help the boda boda riders uplift their livelihoods by providing them with motorbikes while only paying Sh25,000 and the boda boda rider was to pay Sh300 daily and in the end after making the entire payment would later possess the motorbike for good.

Buyu

This move is said to have made the governor panic thinking that this was a ploy to score politically by those whom had fallen out with him politically in what was known as Team Kali which was his campaign team ahead of 2017 general election.

It is against this that the governor is said to have crafted ways of wanting to tax the boda boda operators with an aim of chasing them from the CBD should they fail to comply with the law.

A number of Team Kali campaigners who stuck with the governor and are now out and they include Outa who is the governor’s mentor turned tormentor, former chief of staff Ouya Kalausi among others.

They disagreed with Nyong’o after he was accused of mismanaging the county affairs where Senator Outa during the funeral service of the six youths from Nyando who were brutally murdered in Bumala in Busia county in November last year told the governor to his face that he was sleeping on the job while cartels were plundering the county coffers dry with impunity.

The boda boda operators have vowed to teach the governor a lesson come elections where he is expected to defend his seat.

Bar owners in Kisumu and its environs now plot a boycott against Kenya Breweries Limited products over what they term as poor customer service that has seen faulty fridges dumped in the region.
Some of the bar owners while narrating their ordeal to Weekly Citizen pointed that most fridges supplied in the region are faulty and rarely operates for two months before breaking down after each repair service.
They noted that the development had impacted negatively on sales as most customers prefer cold beer.
A spot check by our under cover team in Kisumu revealed that KBL fridges in most entertainment joints at the Lakeside city have been abandoned and empty.
Kenya Breweries Limited competitors are said to be harvesting bountifully from the fridge crisis that has hit Kisumu as a number of customers rapidly shift their loyalty to other brands Sierra, Heinken, among others from the neighbouring Ugansda served in modern reliable fridges.

Similarly, management of once top joints in the City, Club Barcadia and Janam had bitterly complained following an awful experience with KBL fridges before they respectively closed doors.
However independent investigations point that the experience could be a result of what’s suspected to be a questionable deal between crook officials within KBL and local contractors responsible for repair of fridges in the region.
The bar owners have demanded immediate intervention from the company’s top management intervention to arrest the matter before it spiraled out of control.
