HMD Global has a stellar record of upgrading its devices to the latest versions of Android as well as providing timely security updates.

The Finnish company managed to upgrade almost its entire smartphone lineup, to Android 9 Pie.

With a 96% successful upgrade rate according to research firm Counterpoint, HMD Global, which is responsible for the Nokia brand of smartphones, towers above other device makers in this regard.

The company is looking to replicate the same this year and in 2020 with Android 10.

An update roadmap released by the company’s Chief Product Officer back in August revealed that Nokia smartphone users can look forward to the Android 10 update starting next month.

As we get closer to the beginning of Q4, when the first batch of Nokia smartphones is expected to receive the Android 10 upgrade, the company is eager to share some details about how that will pan out.

An email sent to users that had enrolled to the “Android Q” developer preview for the Nokia 8.1 notifies them of the upcoming update while also informing them of any groundwork that needs to be done in readiness of the update.

Please note that in order to receive the official Android 10 build, your Nokia 8.1 must currently be running one of the following

  1. The official Android 9 Pie release. You can roll back your device to the latest official release from the Nokia phone Android developer preview site, at any time.
  2. Android 10 Beta 5 build: V4.070 or V5.070. If you navigate to “About phone”, these will be referred to as 00WW_4_070 or 00WW_5_070 respectively.

Nokia 8.1 users who haven’t updated to newer builds of the software they have been testing will need to do so in order to receive the update.

“Please note, if you are still running the Beta 3 build, you must update your device to Beta 5 as soon as possible. Devices running the Beta 3 build will not receive the official Android 10 release,” the email reads in part.

Beta 3 is the build that anyone who enrolled their Nokia 8.1 to the Android 10 beta programme as soon as it became open, is running. Users that are still on beta 3 have to manually flash beta 5 through the Nokia developer website while those that are enrolling to the beta at the moment have a choice between the manual process as well as installing it over-the-air.
