NAIROBI, Kenya, May 7 – Nzoia Sugar FC’s hopes of a first-ever league title suffered a setback on Sunday evening when they were pipped 1-0 by AFC Leopards in a FKF Premier League encounter at the Nyayo Stadium.
Nigerian striker Ojo Olaniyi pounced on a chested pass from his skipper, Eugene Mukangula, to slot the ball home past Humphrey Katasi in the sugar millers’ goal on the cusp of halftime.
The same script played out in the second half as both sides went hunting in each other’s territory in search of a goal.
Ingwe’s Mousa Oundo, Jaffar Owiti, Peter Thiong’o, Maxwell Otieno and Brian Wanyama found themselves in the referee’s book for rough play in what was an action-packed, closing 45 minutes.
However, for all the sugar millers’ efforts to resuscitate their dwindling title hopes, the felines held on for the win, a relief following last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Ulinzi Stars.
Elsewhere in Muhoroni, league leaders Gor Mahia came away with a 0-0 barren draw with relegation candidates Wazito FC.
At Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa, veteran coach Twahir Muhiddin kickstarted his reign at Bandari FC with the biggest win in the league this season, overseeing a 7-2 thrashing of Vihiga Bullets.
It seemed to be a woeful day in the office for the league’s strugglers as Mathare United were also pounded 3-0 by Bidco FC in a lunchtime tie at the Kasarani Annex.
Kariobangi Sharks’ slide down the table continued with a 1-0 loss to Sofapaka FC at the same venue as Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno’s Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) beat Posta by the same scoreline.
