Samsung has announced that Samsung Health Monitor, a blood pressure monitoring application, has been cleared in its home country, Korea.

That sets the stage for the app to be made available on the company’s wearable products starting with its latest smartwatch, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2.

Why that particular watch? Well, this is what Samsung says: The Galaxy Watch Active2 comes with more sensitive and accurate Heart Rate Monitoring sensors, and enables users to track their exercise, sleep, stress and get added healthcare insights that can help you improve your wellbeing.

“By helping users measure and track their blood pressure, the Samsung Health Monitor app gives people greater insight into their health and allows them to make more informed decisions, to lead healthier lives,” a statement from the company introducing the app reads.

While Samsung’s smartwatches like the Galaxy Watch Active 2 where it is confirmed that the Samsung Health Monitor app will work usually work with just about any Android device, the blood pressure testing will only be possible when the watch is paired with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

Since its announcement in August last year, Samsung has consistently promised users of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 that it will be bringing ECG (electrocardiogram) features to the watch since one of its hero features is an ECG sensor. That is yet to happen and should not be confused with the blood pressure monitoring that has been announced. The watch’s ECG features are still awaiting the necessary regulatory approvals.

The Samsung Health Monitor will be made available in the third quarter of the year, first on the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and later on newer Samsung watches. Note that there is no mention of older Samsung smartwatches getting it.
