Over 100 Nairobi residents on Saturday turned out for the inaugural fitness programme organised by former Makadara Member of Parliament Reuben Ndolo at Kaloleni’s basketball court in Nairobi.
The participants drawn from the surrounding estates and of different gender and ages gathered at 9.30am and were taken through the intensive aerobics session by professional fitness trainers led by Silas Otieno, Gilbert Andale, Anthony Oduwo and Jeremy Atogo.
The six-month long exercise, to be held every Saturday and Sunday mornings in the city estates, has been started to keep the youth away from vices in the society as the old gain fitness necessary for a healthy living.
“We are here to give them a nice way how to live healthy and avoid being induced into bad habits that end up taking their lives away, I think everyone needs this, it’s about good health,” Ndolo said on the sidelines after being taken through the exercise.
The former Kenya Professional Boxing Commission chairman added: “During our time we used to produce a lot of talents everywhere but nowadays, there’s a lot of talk with no action, that’s why we’ve come back to ensure we give back what we gained during our time.”
“It’s good these certified trainers have agreed to come and help, some are from the armed forces and others from prison, we are all after ensuring our young men and women do something productive for our nation.”
The programme was conducted in the open due to the unavailability of the recreation hall besides the basketball court.
“Sometimes we are being told to pay for the hall that has been occupied by the church on weekends, it’s sad the youths cannot access the area that has been a hub for most boxers in this country,” regretted Ndolo, himself a former professional boxer.
