Over 1000 squatters in the vast Voi Sisal Estate risk eviction

Over 1000 squatters in the vast Voi Sisal Estate risk eviction after the 1900 hectares of land was put up for sale by a private company.

The squatters led by the chairman of Mkamenyi settlement scheme said they inherited the land from their ancestors back in 1990.

Mwanjala blamed the National lands Commission for their woes saying former Chairman Mohammed Swazuri turned down requests to meet the squatters and listen to their grievances.

Hassan Kiboko a squatter also accused the Voi Sisal Management Company of arresting squatters found grazing their animals saying the land belongs to them.

His sentiments were echoed by 41 years old Ngoshi Mwambare who says he has been denied an opportunity to put up a home for his family.

He said claims of ownership by the sisal management company are untrue since their ancestors are actually buried in the said piece of land.

Former MP Mwandawiro Mghanga said the Government must provide solutions in all land conflicts in the Coast region saying the residents are suffering.

Area MCA Omar Ahmed said local administrations engaging in land subdivision by forcefully evicting and arresting the squatters must be brought to book.

The squatters have threatened to invade the ancestral land saying they will not allow Voi Point Limited to subdivided and sell the land.
