Over 30 women in Nyeri to benefit from free fistula surgeries

by kenya-tribune

Over 30 women living with fistula related complications in Nyeri County are expected to receive free surgeries and medical advice in a weeklong free Fistula Camp at Nyeri County Referral Hospital.

The exercise which is being done in partnership with Safaricom Foundation and Flying Doctors’ Society of Africa aims at creating awareness about fistula and the importance of quality maternal health services.

“In Kenya, we have an estimated 3,000 women develop fistula each year. Out of these, only 7.5% are able to access the necessary healthcare. This means that 2,700 women do not receive the recommended treatment. It is for this reason that Safaricom Foundation partnered with the Flying Doctors Society of Kenya to address this challenge,” said John Maitai, Head of Department, Regional Sales and operation, Safaricom, Mt Kenya and Nairobi West.

“At Safaricom, we are about transforming lives. This partnership will transform the lives of 30 women who will receive free fistula surgeries and medical advice, a service they previously could not access. We are proud to be associated with the Flying Doctors Society of Kenya and Nyeri County Government in this exercise. We always look forward to such meaningful partnerships which transform lives and move our country forward in matters related to health,” Maitai added.

It is estimated that there are 3,000 new fistula cases in Kenya each year, and only 7.5 percent of these are able to access medical care.

This means that every year, more than 2,700 women with new fistula cases do not receive the necessary medical attention.
