A Kilimani based posh restaurant in Nairobi, Oyster Bay was yesterday night closed down over noise pollution in a sting multi-agency operation.

The controversial night club is owned by Oyster Bay Limited.

The night club located along Ndemi Road in Kilimani has previously been on the limelight over similar complaints and obstruction of the road by revelers who park along the drive way.

The operation team comprised of officials from the Nairobi City county government and the National Environmental Management Authority (Nema).

They said the restaurant will remain closed indefinitely.

“Schedule on Controlling Noise Pollution, NCCG has undertaken operations at your facility on various occasions following complaints received from the residents of the area. Enforcement actions have been taken including issuing of Improvement notices, arrests, confiscation of sound-amplifying equipment and prosecution at the City’s Court…but you have continued to operate unreservedly,” Nema said in a letter to the owners of the restaurant.

Nema said the restaurant did not submit an Environmental Impact Assessment Report (IAE) before beginning its operations.

Through a correspondence issued by Nema to the directors of Oyster Bay Limited, the authority said that the proprietors of the restaurant have failed to adhere to the regulations even after being issued with a notice.

Last year, Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja ordered the closure of a number of clubs over noise pollution leading to uproar from the stakeholders in the industry who argued that the move would lead to the loss of jobs.
