Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has challenged Members of Parliament to play their oversight role without fear, saying the government was not averse to constructive criticism.

Speaking when he closed the Post-Election Seminar for Members of National Assembly at Pride Inn Paradise Hotel in Mombasa yesterday, the DP told the lawmakers they would not interfere with their work.

The DP said they were keen to have Cabinet Secretaries respond to members’ queries on the floor of the House in a bid to enhance accountability and improve service delivery.

“The Kenya Kwanza Administration is ready and eager to be oversighted by Parliament. We want to be held accountable. That is why we are proposing an amendment to the Standing Orders to allow for Cabinet Secretaries to appear before Parliament,” he said.

Gachagua said elected leaders would not be harassed for differing with the administration adding that a good working relationship between the Executive and Legislature would be beneficial to the country.

“It is important to note that working together, while respecting our various mandates as the three arms of government, will not only make our work easier, but also facilitate smooth service delivery to the people of Kenya,” he added.

He also said the government will not stand in the way of the National Government Constituencies Development Fund and National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).

“Members have vast experience and knowledge of the invaluable contribution of these two Funds in the elevation of communities through sustainable initiatives in Health, Education, Roads Infrastructure and other sectors,” he said.

The DP also asked the lawmakers to support the government’s quest to get rid of cartels in the agricultural sector.
